How to Gift Wine : Wine Gifting Etiquette | Food Network

Give the perfect bottle of wine to your host, boss, best friend and everyone in between. A bottle of wine can be tricky to gift. It can feel like an impersonal, last-minute afterthought if you don't have a strategy, but when done right, it can be a thoughtful and creative treat for the wine lover on your list!Stopping by the wine shop on the way to a gathering and stumped on which bottle to buy? When in doubt, pick a sparkling wine! Not only are bubbles festive and fun, but they are highly versatile and are sure to pair well with whatever is on the menu. Extra points if you choose a bottle of French Champagne, which is always a treat.Another excellent option for a party: magnum bottles. These are twice the size of a standard bottle (1500 ml vs. 750) and are impressive to pop and pour. Holiday parties are a time where you can't have too much wine!As a rule, plan to spend more on a host gift bottle than something you might pop on the couch on a casual weeknight. Think of all of the time, money and effort your hosts invested in the evening. This is the time to properly show your appreciation with a special-occasion-worthy wine, like Darioush 2018 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon.

How to Give Wine as a Gift: Rules to Follow for Giving Bottles

Wine is a great gift, but it's far from one-size-fits-all. Here are some dos and don'ts of giving wine as a gift this holiday season. This story is from an installment of The Oeno Files, our weekly insider newsletter to the world of fine wine. Sign up here. We all know the adage “It’s better to give than to receive,” and this is especially true if we’re giving a gift that we have put thought and energy into. One way to take that pressure off is to give everyone, when appropriate, gifts from a single category, such as food, housewares, books, or—our favorite—wine. When you narrow your scope to one type of present, you’ll find it focuses your efforts in a way that allows you to be more thoughtful and clever in your choices. You don’t have to be obvious in your pursuit of figuring out what your friend, colleague, or family member wants—because gifts are supposed to be surprises—but there’s always an opportunity in conversation to discover the types of wine they are enjoying lately. Don’t be afraid to just outright ask them about favorite regions, varietals, and producers, then follow those leads when it is time to go procure their gift. ... Once upon a time, we were given a grease and dust covered bottle that clearly came from atop the cabinet over a stove. If your brother-in-law is a hard-core Napa Cab devotee while you’re currently digging orange wine from Slovenia, suck it up and buy the Napa Cab. It’s okay to serve that funky, skin-contact juice at dinner and extoll its charms, but don’t give it as a gift and expect him to like it.

How to give wine that makes an impression

Whether it’s for a close friend, a business associate, or a family celebration, picking the perfect wine shows thought, taste, and a bit of flair. A simple paper bag might be fine for a casual gathering, but for a special gift, take the time to wrap it well. You could use a wooden wine box, a stylish gift bag, or even have it delivered in a custom hamper. Adding a handwritten note with a short message or tasting suggestion can give your gift a warm, personal touch.Do they like bold reds or crisp whites? Are they adventurous drinkers or loyal to a favourite type? Sometimes, it’s worth going the extra mile – for example, to gift a bottle of Château Margaux wine – because a label with history and reputation adds to the wow factor.A good wine gift is one that feels in tune with the occasion. For a summer picnic, a chilled rosé or a sparkling Prosecco can set the mood. For a winter dinner, a rich Bordeaux or an earthy Pinot Noir can make the evening feel special. Consider the food that might be served, too.Every wine has a story – about the vineyard, the winemaker, or the vintage year. Sharing a little of that background can make your gift feel even more personal. It could be something as simple as telling them the wine comes from a small family-run vineyard in Italy, or explaining how a particular vintage was an exceptional year.

How to Give Wine as a Gift

Don’t just grab a bottle with a pretty label or hefty price tag. Here’s how to choose a wine that fits the recipient and occasion If you don’t already regularly chat about wine with them (and can’t simply ask a spouse or close friend or relative), pay attention next time you get together and ask them questions about what they’re drinking, or if you’re at their house, ask for a tour of their cellar to get them talking, without having to give away that you’re trying to come up with gift ideas. If you don’t know much about what the recipient drinks (“she likes Cabernet”), try giving them a wine from somewhere they vacationed recently to bring back fond memories or from one of their wish-list destinations, to give them a taste introduction to the area. And many of the world's wine regions make excellent, more affordable sparkling wines, from U.S. bubblies made in the Champagne style to French crémants to Spanish cava to Italian Prosecco, Franciacorta and Trentodoc. If bubbly seems a bit too predictable, give it a bit of a twist with a brut rosé bottling.Or if your sweetie enjoys sweet wines, try this lovely surprise from Italy: Brachetto d'Aqui, a sparkling sweet red from Italy's Piedmont region—which pairs well with fresh berries, fruit tarts and chocolate desserts. Considering that chocolate is among the most popular Valentine's gifts, you may want to give your partner some top-notch chocolates matched to a bottle of wine.

Give the Gift of a Captivating Sweet Wine | Wine Enthusiast

For a gift that will impress a wine aficionado and a newbie alike, look no further than a bottle of sweet wine. Sweet red wine is the often-overlooked gem of the wine world, offering a delightful blend of richness and fruitiness. With bold flavors of dark fruit, these wines shine alongside chocolate desserts and berry tarts and can even tame spicy barbecue. The Austrian marvel packs flavor in a small bottle and gives a unique drinking experience.Sweet wines have long been the misunderstood stepchildren of the wine world—often dismissed as cloying. This is far from the truth, as the best examples exhibit complexity that is hard to get in a dry wine, simply because of the ripeness of the grapes at harvest. Now, sweet wines are captivating the palates of both novice drinkers and seasoned connoisseurs alike. Their balanced sweetness, paired with vibrant acidity, creates a delightful tension that’s both voluptuous and harmonious. This unique interplay means they can effortlessly pair with everything from rich cheeses to decadent desserts, and sometimes even steak. Moreover, many sweet wines age beautifully because both the sugar and acidity act as natural preservatives. A well-chosen bottle can be enjoyed immediately or savored years down the line, offering a delightful surprise on special occasions.

r/wine on Reddit: Your experiences with gifting wine to "normal" people

The other side to this coin is...we know people buy/drink wine immediately..and in most cases, people know you have given them wine that is better than what they normally drink..so they're saving it for a special occasion, otherwise they would've consumed it immediately. Keep notes and get them either exactly what they like (if they name a specific wine maker), or something in the realm of their preferences (a certain variety or flavor profile). I've had people buy me Cabernets that I know I'm never going to drink because I don't like Cabs, but it's awkward to say you don't like a gift, so I just accept it and give it to my husband later. The rest of us all understand what you mean. You’re referring to non-connoisseurs and there’s nothing derogatory about someone casually enjoying wine. But yes, a connoisseur should never give a gift to someone who cannot appreciate it because it gives no joy to either.Where I come from it's the traditional alcohol and especially around holidays it's what people drink and sort a standard gift so I've given and received a lot of bottles and probably I received feedback like 3-4 times in total and I might've said once or twice, oh, I liked the wine you gave me.But then again like 90% of the time it's one of the common local wines so probably most people had it before or had something similar anyways. Plus most people just drink it and don't think about it too much. Also, I always give my dad some sort of port(well, tawny or colheita because that's his favorite style)or in any case some dessert wine.
