How to gift a (self proclaimed) connoisseur?

Main Post:

Hi people of Reddit!

I am not a wine guy. I like it when ppl give it to me, but I do not understand what’s good and what isn’t. All of my people love it, my girlfriend’s family especially!

I want to know, what is a nice bottle to give as a gift to someone who knows a lot about wine? Something that would have a cool story or comes from a nice vineyard without totally breaking the bank.

I would like to buy some cases of $50-$250 bottles to give as gifts throughout my life, and I have no idea what to buy. Any and all recommendations are welcome!

Top Comment:

Depends on what they like though. If you are to buy one or more cases and plan to give them over time, you have to have the right conditions for storing wines for 5-10-20 years. If not they might age poorly.

But I would say champagne is a nice gift that goes well both with and without food (though not necessarily all kinds of food) and most of it stores well. If you buy say one or two cases of the same champagne you can also taste it and maybe notice the difference as it ages. If not maybe some Bordeaux? But a lot of Bordeaux wine would have to be stored for like 20 years.

That’s two out of many regions that have wine that ages well. I’m sure other people here will recommend Italian wines, US wines etc. and I would say it comes down to preferences and availability where you live.

Give me your best wine 101 lesson

Main Post:

I'm new to wine and know nothing about it. I love moscato (I love how sweet it is) and that's pretty much it. Can someone give me a short wine 101 lesson/ tips/ wines to try or even random facts (about wine :P) would be nice. Thanks in advanced guys. :)

Top Comment: In Italian Moscato means "Wine for stay at home mothers who share crappy recipes on Facebook too much." Leonardo DaVinci actually made the first Moscato for Lisa Gherardhini (Mona Lisa) as a wine to compliment her love of the pumpahkina spice-ah latte, a traditional Italian beverage after Julius Caesar invented the espresso machine in the 3rd century. Sorry in advance.

Looking for some help for a gift to give a wine drinker.

Main Post:

I did some quick searching through this subreddit and didn't find what I was looking for, so I apologize ahead of time if this is one of those questions you get all the time.

I have a friend (and his wife) who help me out a lot. I travel for work and whenever I'm in the area (relatively often), they put me up in their apartment so I can stay for a few extra days, take me out to dinner, etc. etc.

I'd like to give a nice gift as a thanks for all they've done. I am very novice when it comes to wine, and they are absolutely not. They live near wine country, have an apartment full of (filled) wine racks, and own what I assume to be all the necessary accessories.

So what can I offer them? I know he is a big fan of chardonnay, and pinot noir comes in a close second. With my limited knowledge, I was able to discern that he owns and enjoys a few bottles of the Toasted Head Chardonnay, so that may offer some insight into his preference.

I'd like to put a basket together, with at least 1 or two bottles of wine (a chardonnay and a pinot?), and possibly anything else that may pair well - what else comes in a wine basket? Cheese? I wouldn't know the first thing about pairing these items. Or maybe just the bottle(s) of wine? I don't know here.

Ideally, I would keep the cost of the entire basket under $100. If it helps, they live in San Francisco. I will be visiting again this weekend, and would have a free day on Monday to pick something up if anybody knows something local that would work. Is there anything special that could impress a wine drinker?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Update: I'm a big fan of the wine tour/designated driver experience. Brilliant suggestion. Unfortunately it is just not possible on such short notice and with the weekend plans already set in stone. This will happen in the future though!

As of now, I've picked up a bottle of Chateau de Fuisse Vieilles Vigne as suggested by redaniel (since deleted). drchickenbeer also hinted at purchasing a white burgundy, and the people with whom I spoke at the seemingly only place in Chicago that had it in stock gave it high praise. I plan to visit a local boutique shop when I arrive in San Francisco and round out the package with another bottle and cheeses, fruits, chocolate, etc. Many thanks to all of you! I've had a great time learning and discussing wine, even in just the few hours I've spent on the subject. Looks like I may be spending more time in this subreddit in the future...

Top Comment: The bad news is that I generally caution non wine people against gifting wine enthusiasts wine for the simple reason that the hobbiest has much better insight into their personal tastes than you will. The good news is that if they're used to Toasted Head most anything that local bottle shop recommends is going to be an improvement and your price range certainly allows for enough flexibility to get the job done. You could get decent enough J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that would send a couple messages. They're potentially a good step up from Toasted Head, but they don't scream just tossing money at a gift for show, or simply picking a fancy or even clever label. Those are both solid 90 point wines (in the vintages you're most likely to find on the shelves right now). And they should be in the $25/bottle range leaving you plenty for gourmet crackers, cheeses, charcuterie meats, etc to fill out the basket. Or, you could treat them to a day of wine tastings at wineries where you are the designated driver. They'd remember that long after they've forgotten exactly what was in the basket.

Does Majordomo in Blood & Wine give any prize for beating him in Gwent?

Main Post:

Majordomo at the Corvo Bianco seems to have all decks, and all cards in Gwent. I beat him on strong level against all of his decks, but nothing happened.

Is he just a fancy Gwent distraction? Or is there more to it?

(I would love a prize : ))

Give me your wine recommendations

Main Post:

Red, white, rose, sparkling. My state doesn’t allow wine sales at grocery stores, but I’m heading to Joshua Tree soon for a weekend with friends and looking for some wine reccos.

Top Comment: Espiral Vinho Verde, a delicious Portuguese wine that’s usually priced right around $5.

For Victory: WHERES THE FUCKING WINE

Main Post:

I mean god seriously? Where the fuck do I get this fucking wine from. Apparently I find some Cook named Manyeta but for the goddamn life of me I cannot find her.

I have played this section for four fucking times.

Talked to everyone, slept with everyone I can, and more. Yet for some reason no matter how many floors and rooms I search I cannot find where the fucking wine is.

Nor can I find the apparent cook that is supposed to give it to me.

I enjoy the game, but I’ve found so many instances where a single NPC must be spoken to or a single objective must be done and I’ve struggled for about 4 hours to find that objective/NPC and it’s goddamn infuriating.

Look I love the savior schnapps system. But only if your game is finished.

If I have to spend 1 1/2 hours in a quest only to get fucked by a bug I should at least be able to save there.

Idk maybe it’s late and I’ve been playing too long and I’m tired and raging my tits off.

But I, kid you not, have spend 1 1/2 hours searching for this fucking cook to give me some fucking wine so I continue on with the story and I’m gonna lose my shit.

About to leave a negative review >:(

Top Comment: The Devs seem to think figuring out their lack of game pathing is fun. Its disjointed and inconsistent at best.
